Coyne takes on Layton in Toronto-Danforth

Don't get excited. It's my cousin Debbie: "TORONTO (March 31, 2007): An overflowing crowd at Frankland Community Centre cheered on March 24th as longtime Liberal Deborah Coyne announced she will run as the Liberal candidate for the Toronto-Danforth riding...."
Longtime Liberal calls for Canada to choose sincerity over shallowness

TORONTO (March 31, 2007): An overflowing crowd at Frankland Community Centre cheered on March 24th as longtime Liberal Deborah Coyne announced she will run as the Liberal candidate for the Toronto-Danforth riding.

In her acceptance speech, Coyne vowed to do better than incumbent Jack Layton, who is so preoccupied with political machinations in Ottawa that he is rarely seen in his own riding. “As your Liberal candidate in Toronto-Danforth and next Member of Parliament, I intend to speak out forcefully, and get action, on all issues of concern to all of us living in this great riding.”

Coyne spoke of some of the local needs of Toronto-Danforth that need urgentattention: coherent action on the environment to make Canada the greenest country on the planet; a national child care program; a national sales tax; better support for seniors and the disabled as well as aboriginal Canadians and the most vulnerable among us; better funding for our arts and cultural communities; promotion of greater community safety; and real equality of opportunity for all Canadians...
MORE: Here's the text of her speech accepting the nomination.

It seems a bit counterproductive for a long time Liberal to ask Canada to choose sincerity over shallowness.

I wish her well, but it does look like quite a longshot.

I do not wish her well.. She is hostile toward Quebec.

I prefer Jack Layton.

A national sales tax!?!

You gotta love people from Rosedale...

It's called the G-S-T.

Ask you servants about it.

Champagne Socialist vs. Limousine Liberal

If I'm not on pins-and-needles from anticipation, then my ass just fell asleep.

Andrew, if you ran anywhere, for any party,I'd be the first contributor. Please, do so sometime.

forshadowing for Andrew's own run - how appropriate...

Within the Liberal party it appears the Family Compact is alive and well in ontario.

Her's and Andrew's view of federalism is passe.

But QS's view of Quebec independence is even more so.

And Jack's view never was and never will be in vogue.

(full disclosure - Deb Coyne was instrumental in helping me get an appearance before the Charest commission back in the Meech days -she was an assistant to Clyde Wells at the time - and I am forever in her debt for it)

Ummmm. So she's replacing Jack because he is too busy in Ottawa to pay attention to local needs of Toronto-Danforth which happen to all be Liberal national policies that can only be implmemented from Ottawa and which have nothing in particular to do with the Dansforth as opposed to, for example, Penticton. With a pitch like that, Jack must be shaking in his boots.

"It's call the GST, ask your servants about it",

LMAO!

God bless the ivory tower Limo Libs.

"Deborah Coyne’s Views on a National Sales Tax

We should have a national sales tax that consolidates the GST and provincial sales taxes. This measure would be welcomed by Canadian business.

The Harper government continues the Mulroney example of unraveling the federal government. It is thus easy for Mr. Harper to buy into the provincialist/separatist rhetoric of “fiscal imbalance”, which he proposes to correct through changes in equalization payments, but more disturbingly through a significant reduction in federal taxes – personal, business and consumption – so that provinces can then move into the tax room themselves and impose their own taxes."

Does she know that Liberals run in Alberta too? I'm sure Tory candidates would love to run "you'll pay 14% rather than 6%" ads. I'm sure the provinces are only going to love subordinating their tax powers to Ottawa and giving up their constitutional prerogatives.

Why? Do you really think it's that uncommon for families to contain people with different opinions?

The CPC candidate in Toronto-Danforth in one of the recent elections was Loftus Cuddy, brother of Jim Cuddy from Blue Rodeo. Jim is an NDP'er, but he went on the record as saying he hoped his brother did well. I don't see anything strange about that. Do you?

Having said that, I'm afraid Ms. Coyne doesn't stand much chance of unseating Jack. The Libs won't get that riding back until Jack decides he's had enough of Ottawa.

Actually, Debbie and I agree on more things than we disagree on. And one of the things on which we are most agreed is that she would make a fine Member of Parliament.

I said interesting....who says total agreement is interesting. Herb, why that word is a problem is beyond me.

It was more a comment that you have two well informed people at elite levels in their respective fields. I am sure there is broad agreement on lots of things.

However I am sure everyone retires to the family room when over pumpkin pie and coffee AC and DC (never noticed that) cut into a rousing debate over the finer points of tax policy....

Anyway, good MP's whether you agree with them or disagree with them are hard to find. Knowing that the MP is honest and smart is about 90% of the whole thing...the rest can be figured out later.

Certainly prefer DC over Jack Layton....no question there
